Politicians with dual citizenship cannot be trusted to defend our national interests

The Charrandas Persaud Affair has highlighted Guyana’s very real constitutional crisis, namely, that in breach of the constitution, many politicians and presidential aspirants possess dual citizenship and are citizens of the so-called ABC countries. These politicians, regardless of which side of the political divide they find themselves, are all compromised. Their dual citizenship necessarily leads to an obvious conflict of interest. Since their patriotism is conflicted, they cannot be trusted to defend the national interests of Guyana. It is no wonder that they remain silent when the representatives of these imperial countries meddle in our domestic affairs, as though we are still a colony.

Real patriots and nationalists do not hold dual citizenship, nor do they negotiate contracts that allow rapacious and unscrupulous corporations such as ExxonMobil to plunder Guyanese resources. Real patriots and nationalists jealously and zealously protect the sovereignty, independence and natural resources of their country from imperial entities and corporate predators. It is time for true patriots to be at the helm of the national affairs of this land. Only then will Guyanese get the leadership they long for.
